The Phil Abrunzo Collection

On this page, you'll find images contributed by Philip A. Abrunzo, a former member of C Battery. The snapshots were taken by Corporal Fred Shook, the power-plant operator in Abrunzo's searchlight section. Any former members who can add to the captions are invited to send information to the Webmaster.

THE WHOLE GANG, FRANCE, 1944 (8 K)

The Whole Gang
Abrunzo's section was deployed at the end of the airstrip at Harcourt, France, a small village about ten (10) miles from Metz, when this photo was taken in 1944. Left to right: PFC Jack Burris, PFC Frank J. Sparaccio, CPL Arvin Mathes, CPL Phil Abrunzo (behind the apple), PFC Ping Y. Fong, and SGT J. B. Allen (the boss). CPL Shook is the only missing member (he took the picture!).

OUR CHRISTMAS TURKEY (11 K)

Our Christmas Turkey
PFC Jack Burris with the section's Christmas turkey, 25 December 1944. In the background are the cables linking the section's searchlight, radar, and power plant. They have been raised off the ground by using homemade Y-shaped "crutches" — this was done so the cables would not be lying on the snow and get frozen in (this would have posed a problem if the section had to pull up stakes and move out in a hurry).

CORPORAL FRED SHOOK (6 K)

Corporal Fred Shook
CPL Fred Shook, the section power-plant operator, pictured in France, December 1945. He's standing in front of the section's two tents (one was for sleeping; the other for communications).
