|Americans Enter Berlin (Finally)
A Sherman tank of the U. S. 2nd Armored Division enters Berlin on July 4, 1945 as the formal American occupation of the U. S. zone of the smashed city begins. This photo was taken by Acme photographer Charles Haacker and flashed to the States by radio that night. It probably was the average American citizen's first glimpse of the former Nazi capital, which was under exclusive Russian control since the German surrender on May 8. Reports from American GIs described Berlin as a "colossal mess," with very few walls left standing and nearly nonexistent transportation facilities. In Haacker's photo, the crowds, with little to do no jobs and certainly no entertainment watch as the tank rumbles along a city street. (from the Webmaster's collection).
