On V-E Day, 8 May 1945, in Unter Biberg, Germany (a suburb of Munich), 59 members of the 225th signed a captured Nazi flag. It was not only a proud symbol of the Allied victory over Germany and the end of the war in Europe, but the testimony of those Skylighters that signed it to the fact that they’d survived the war and had contributed to winning it. Now in the possession of Art Lewinsky’s (died in 2004) widow, Phoebe (who will turn 102 years young in May 2022), the names of the men who signed the flag – reproduced exactly as they appear on it – are the following.
