After the cessation of hostilities, each man totaled up their “points” to see how close they were to being discharged and going home. This handy table was published in The Stars and Stripes, Paris Edition, on 11 May 1945, just three
days after the surrender of Germany. The “magic number” was 85.
These GI’s working on a road detail on a Western Pacific island base are taking no chances with passing motorists interfering with them getting home safely after four years of war. There’s too much at stake. Left to right
