Deadly Doodlebug

Members of the U.S. Navy 2nd Beach Battalion examine several captured radio-controlled German Goliath remote-controlled mines (aka “Beetles” or “Doodlebugs”) to see what makes them tick, Utah Beach, 11 June 1944. The Goliath was designed to be driven remotely from within German strongpoints behind the dunes and detonated amid troops sheltering on the beach. Most bogged down in the sand. Note: The V-1 rockets were also called “doodlebugs,” but they were far deadlier and more destructive than the Goliaths.
